Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC)

Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory’s Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS)—the world’s first hard X-ray free-electron laser—is at the forefront of X-ray science. LCLS creates X-ray pulses a billion times brighter than previously available at synchrotrons and the unique light can see details down to the size of atoms and chemical and natural processes that occur in less than one tenth of a trillionth of a second. LCLS is being used for groundbreaking research in physics, structural biology, energy science, chemistry and many other diverse fields.

    General:

  • Visitors are required to review and agree to assume certain risks of participating in the tour, which are specified in a waiver for your signature.
  • SLAC research is unclassified and photography is permitted; however, tripods are not allowed on tours.
  • Tours involve walking and climbing stairs. If you require assistance or have accessibility concerns, please contact us in advance at tours@slac.stanford.edu.
  • A valid government-issued photo ID is required to participate.
    Safety:

  • All visitors must wear closed-toed shoes.
  • SLAC is an active research laboratory. Please stay with the guide at all times and do not touch any scientific equipment unless instructed to do so by your guide.
  • There are some areas at SLAC where personnel could potentially be exposed to low levels of radiation, which may pose risks to human health. However, those areas will not be included in your tour.

National Ignition Facility (NIF) SOLD OUT!
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is home to the National Ignition Facility (NIF). NIF’s 192 powerful laser beams, housed in a 10-story building the size of three football fields, can deliver nearly 2 million joules of ultraviolet laser energy in billionth-of-a-second pulses to the target chamber center. NIF is a national resource—a unique experimental facility addressing compelling national security, energy, and science missions.

-Please read these guidelines and important information for the NIF tour-

  • Bring identification:
    • Foreign Nationals must bring their valid passports in order to get badged.
    • The following state and territory driver’s licenses (unless an Enhanced Driver’s License ­and identification card) can no longer be used for valid identification:  American Samoa, Missouri, Minnesota, Washington. Individuals with a driver’s license from these states will need to provide a current (non-expired) secondary form of identification. Acceptable IDs include: US Passport, US Passport card, US Military ID, Foreign government issued passport.
    Safety:

  • All visitors must wear sturdy shoes inclosing the entire foot; no high or pointy heel shoes.
  • Visitors must keep their cell phones in their pockets at all time
